Take a good look at the pair of sneakers pictured here. This pair of Bata Bullets was very popular in the 60's. They were popular because parents purchased them for their kids but they were not loved by the kids.
No one was happy to get a new pair of Bata bullets or even Doric sneakers. Most kids attending primary school, especially the boys, had a pair of BATA Bullets - don't be ashamed to admit it, you had a pair.!
When I searched "BATA bullets" on the web most of persons commenting basically stated that they would not be caught dead wearing BATA bullets (it engendered bad feelings 'back in the day' and is now considered a big joke). The teenage dilemma is that you could not play off being cool whilst wearing Bata bullets. That was then, but if you look at the sneakers pictured here surely these would fit in to today's lifestyle and would be considered 'cool' (but not the plastic ones though).
As a child attending primary school in Trinidad and Tobago, you did not have a choice and had to wear what your parents could afford. It is amazing the names people gave to sneakers and the very funny conversations that were caused by sneakers (especially the stinky ones).
So as a follow up article, I will save the really good stuff that will deal with the names and funny things that I can remember about sneakers from back in the day. This gives you an opportunity to reflect and contribute to the post.
